course. it's new year's eve in new york city. but the snow will be gone by then. it is a snowstorm nonetheless and the roads and anyone traveling in the northeast will run into some issues. we've already seen some reports of pretty bad road conditions across pennsylvania and new york state. that's where the snow has been heaviest. in new york right now it's just pretty at this point. it hasn't really made a mess of the roadways. the storm is going to take this track, moving in from the mid-atlantic and then off the coast of cape cod, massachusetts. that's going to keep the heaviest of the snow right in that area in pink from boston right back into hartford. that's where we're going to see our heaviest snow. everywhere elsewhere we have those winter weather advisories we are going to get some snow but about 1 to 3 inches. so it's totally manageable. but any snow on the roads obviously does cause some issues. you see on the storm tracker here where the shades of blue are showing up across new york, back into eastern pennsylvania, even in central new jersey. that's where the snow is c

, the killing field. what's left this morning? a small city of grief. a state in mourning. a country with new questions about the price of freedom. good morning, everyone. and welcome to "weekends with alex witt." we're calling it a tragedy, but that particular word nor any other could describe what happened on a cold, bright winter morning in newtown, connecticut. i'm afraid the answers we try to provide in the next hour to the most pressing questions will feel inat adequate to all of us, but we'll try with an admitedly heavy heart. here is what we know. there are new details to report among the 28 people dead are 20 schoolchildren, ages 5 to 10, and the gunman, who also killed his mother, prior to the massacre. this is the nation's second deadliest shooting. 33 people died at virginia tech in 2007. at this hour, investigators are working to learn as much as they can about the gunman. he's been identified as 20-year-old adam lanza. so far, authorities have not spoken publicly about a possible motive. ♪ >> the community is in mourning, at least 2,000 gathered for a vigil last night

massachusetts right now, sprinkling in new york city. some heavier rain in southern ohio. the big story is the winter weather out through montana, through the dakotas and eventually spreading east into minnesota and eventually wisconsin later today. because of that we do have winter storm warnings and advisories all across the northern tier of the country, the northern rockies, back into idaho. we are going to see some of that snow continue to fall throughout the day. it doesn't look too bad now but we will see it intensify and also some isolated blizzard warnings across the northern rockies as well. once those winds pick up and visibility reduced. billings, montana, 25 degrees, 43 in chicago and northeast, even boston, we'll top out around 46 degrees today. while it is snowing across the northern rockies, no snow across the northeast. instead showery this morning. some improvements this afternoon. even sunday it still looks unsettled. in fact, the entire northeast will be unsettled into the start of next week. alex. >> thanks for that. >>> the second winner of last month's huge powerball jack
